2011 04 15 Launched an impressive scale drilling through the lagoon

On the April 15 th. JSC Edrija began drilling works under the Curonian Lagoon bottom, which will be approximately 1680 meters long. Drilling works was watched by the Minister of Republic of Lithuania E.Masiulis, Klaipeda and Neringa municipality representatives and the Curonian National Park representatives. Implementation of the project RAIN-2 fiber-optic cable line will be built to the settlements of Neringa City Municipality and Smiltynė.

 

Borehole from Klaipeda to Neringa under the Curonian Lagoon bottom is not only the longest in Lithuania, but also one of the longest continuous closed transitions in the Baltic countries.

This project "Rural Area Information Technology Broadband Network Development RAIN" (RAIN-2) phase requires innovative technology, powerful technology and highly skilled professionals. Implementation of the project, particular attention is paid to environmental conservation. Construction works are carried out using environmentally-friendly trenchless technology. The pipe is laid in the bottom of the lagoon, 30 meters below water level. Such depth is sufficient to prevent damage to the Curonian lagoon ecosystem.

Within the project RAIN implementation JSC Edrija build of more than 1255 km of optical cable lines.

Project "Rural Area Information Technology Broadband Network Development RAIN" (RAIN-2) is funded from the 2007-2013 European Union Structural Funds and the Republic of Lithuania budget.
